My Favorite Bars In New York.
Chumleys
86 Bedford St
New York, NY 10014
(212) 675-4449
The closing of Chumley’s in 2006 shook and still saddens me terribly. This is likely the most storied and greatest actual Prohibition speakeasy ever – the definition of cool - replete with trap doors, hidden bookcase doors, unmarked entrances and unruly characters. I frequently found myself in various states of debauchery at Chumleys, in the early morning here, back in the day. Towards the end, it tended to attract a lot of Eurotrash and college “bro” douchebags – but, it was the shizzle none the less. Here’s to hoping they re-open very, very soon. Little known fact: it’s address is the source of the well-known, modern day restaurant term “86.”
